Despite steel, glass and concrete, hard edges and angular lines, this home was designed with the environment in mind, to tuck into the coastal landscape as a complement to the terrain. So was the garden. In keeping with the clean, contemporary design of the architecture, plants were chosen for their sculptural elements. Low-growing plants and grasses carpet the hillside, punctuated by color and certain succulents, while stone steps traipse down through the garden. Plants sprout from layered-concrete boxes that continue the line of the wall flanking the entry to the home, a stone pathway of decomposed granite beneath slate slabs, edged in Corten steel to match the roofline. The overall effect is both organic and intentional, artistry which honors the landscape and makes something of it.
